Clastic anatomy models of the human heart and larynx
Painted papier-mâché section with numbered stickers indicating the various parts of the heart and larynx anatomy.
Auzoux pen signature Paris, circa 1952. Slightly missing.
Louis-Thomas-Jérôme Auzoux (1797-1878) began making clastic anatomy models as early as 1824, a word derived from the Greek "Klao", meaning to break. As early as 1824, following a favorable report from the Académie Royale de Médecine, he received his first official order from the Ministry of the Interior; and in 1825 he produced his first écorché, which he submitted to the Académie des Sciences. In 1828, he began mass production in his native village of Saint-Aubin-d'Écrosville, with a workforce of around 50. Each model was made up of solid pieces of papier-mâché (a mixture of torn paper, flour glue, blanc de Meudon, chopped hemp and cork powder), which could be assembled and disassembled, and removed one by one like a real dissection.
All elements are numbered on small paper inserts.
Ditto for the larynx
