FRENCH SCHOOL, ca. 1900—Pair of drawings in pen, black ink, - Lot 83
FRENCH SCHOOL, ca. 1900—Pair of drawings in pen, black ink, and gray wash on paper (17 × 103 cm each, as depicted). Toulon, panoramic views of the harbor: Tamaris and Balaguier, the Arsenal. Unsigned. Mounted on salmon-colored Marie-Louise mats with black borders, framed under glass (black and speckled gold frame). Water stains and foxing, more pronounced on the view of the Arsenal. Two long “coastal views” taken from the water. The first follows the Tamaris shoreline to the Fort de Balaguier: villas, a domed pavilion, an avenue of palm trees, a pier on stilts where a small steamboat is docked, and a windmill. The second shows the Arsenal: covered dry docks, cranes, factory chimneys, a row of trees, and warships at the dock. The buildings of the seaside resort founded by Michel Pacha and the silhouettes of the ships date these views to around 1890–1910.
