FRENCH SCHOOL, circa 1900—Pair of drawings in pen, black ink - Lot 84
FRENCH SCHOOL, circa 1900—Pair of drawings in pen, black ink, and gray wash on paper (17 × 103 cm each, as depicted). Toulon, panoramic views of the harbor: the Tamaris coast and the Arsenal. Unsigned. Mounted on salmon-pink Marie-Louise mats with black borders, framed under glass (black and speckled gold frame). Water stains and foxing. Two long “coastal views” taken from the water. The first depicts the Tamaris shoreline: villas, palm trees, an arcaded pavilion at the water’s edge, a pier on stilts, and, on the hill, a large building flanked by towers (presumably the Grand Hôtel de Tamaris); in the distance, the Deux Frères rocks. The second shows the docks and buildings of the Arsenal, with a battleship featuring naval masts and a squadron at anchor. The buildings of the seaside resort founded by Michel Pacha and the silhouettes of the ships date these views to around 1890–1910.
